Dr. Sumeet Jaiswal is an MCh plastic surgeon with 23 years of clinical experience (practising since 2003). Penile implant procedures are performed only after an in-depth medical consultation and pre-operative assessment.
A penile implant is a surgical procedure usually recommended only after other treatments for erectile dysfunction have been tried. Here is how the process typically works.
Your surgeon reviews your medical history, previous ED treatments (tablets, injections, vacuum devices), diabetes, heart health and any prostate surgery, and explains every implant option.
Routine blood tests, blood sugar (HbA1c), urine culture and a fitness check for anaesthesia. Any urinary or skin infection is treated before surgery is scheduled.
The implant is placed under spinal or general anaesthesia through a small incision. The operation usually takes 1–2 hours, and antibiotics are given to lower infection risk.
Most patients stay 1–3 nights. A urinary catheter may be used for the first day, and pain is managed with oral medication.
Mild swelling and soreness settle over 2–3 weeks. Most people return to desk work within 1–2 weeks and avoid heavy lifting for around 4–6 weeks.
At the 4–6 week review your surgeon checks healing and, for inflatable devices, teaches you how to operate the pump. A free follow-up consultation is included.
In Bhubaneswar, penile implant surgery is performed by Dr. Sumeet Jaiswal at Ahalya Hospital, Near Infocity Police Station, Patharagadia, Bhubaneswar, Odisha 751024. Patients also travel from Cuttack, Puri, Khordha and Berhampur for consultation and surgery.
Like any surgery, a penile implant has risks. Your surgeon will discuss these openly so you can make an informed decision.
Infection (the most serious complication, more common in people with poorly controlled diabetes), bleeding or swelling, mechanical failure of an inflatable device, and in rare cases the need for revision surgery.
Active urinary, skin or other infection, uncontrolled diabetes, or if first-line treatments such as oral medication have not yet been tried. Your doctor may suggest treating these first.
Oral ED medication, penile injections, vacuum erection devices, and treating underlying causes such as diabetes, high blood pressure or hormonal problems.

A penile implant (penile prosthesis) is a surgically placed medical device used to treat erectile dysfunction that hasn't responded to medication, injections, or other treatments. It is also used after prostate surgery or for certain congenital or Peyronie's disease-related conditions.
There are two main categories: malleable (semi-rigid) implants, which are bendable rods that can be positioned as needed, and inflatable implants (two-piece or three-piece, such as AMS 700-type devices), which are filled and emptied using a small internal pump. Your surgeon will discuss which is right for you during consultation.
Indian malleable implants in Bhubaneswar start from around ₹1,50,000. Imported and inflatable devices are quoted at your consultation, depending on the device type and brand. A full quote is provided after your consultation.
Penile implants are generally considered for men with erectile dysfunction that hasn't responded to oral medication, injections, or vacuum devices, as well as men recovering from prostate surgery or living with Peyronie's disease. Your surgeon will assess your suitability during consultation.
The procedure is performed under anaesthesia, so there is no pain during surgery. A hospital stay of 1-3 nights is typical, with some soreness for a couple of weeks afterward. Most patients are advised to wait around 4-6 weeks before the implant is used, as guided by the surgeon.
The main risks are infection, bleeding, swelling and, with inflatable devices, mechanical failure over time. Infection risk is higher in people with poorly controlled diabetes, so blood sugar is checked before surgery. Your surgeon will explain how these risks apply to you.
Most modern penile implants work well for many years, and a large proportion are still functioning 10 years or more after surgery. Malleable implants have no moving parts, while inflatable devices may eventually need a revision procedure if a component wears out.
